Sunday, 8/5 This morning we hiked up to the top of
Little Devil's Tower….steadily up, up, up
for 1.5 miles at the end of which we were climbing or "scrambling" up rocky passages to the top.

At the top! |
Gorgeous 360 view which included the back
side of Mt Rushmore and some of the Needles.
The path glittered with mica and pyrite and pink quartz…..the scramble
short section required us to go backwards and/or on our butts for much of the
way down--fun! Only mildly dangerous at
times, but it made us feel like real rock climbers. Came back to the RV and desperately needed a
nap. From noon until about 5, there was
a constant rumble of motorcycles going in both directions past us on the
Needles Highway scenic route...hundreds and hundreds of them.
Starting at about
5:30pm there was a group of 6 bikers just hanging out right by our RV, since
we're in Site #1, which is on very close to the campground entrance/Needles
Highway (and yes, if you say that fast, it sounds just like "Nils"
Highway). Drinkin' and laughin' and
makin' a bit of a ruckus. Hmmm. By 8pm
they finally took off (loudly), for wherever they were staying. I had to laugh that we were, just a few feet
away from them, enjoying activities which were about as diametrically opposed
to the whole Bad-ass Biker scene as you could possibly imagine: eating vegan food
(nori wraps with lettuce, RV-grown sprouts and homemade horseradish sauce)
while watching Season 2 of the West Wing, for goodness' sake (full of
bleeding-heart liberal, tree-hugging, gun-control, big government sentiment
that it is). If you peruse the link to
the Motorcycle Rally activities ( www.buffalochip.com/ ), you will appreciate the irony even more.
Lisa, Nils,
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great trip. Lisa, your commentary is a real treat. It was great seeing you at the wedding. Hope the next time is soon. Drive safely.
